Why is ISO 50001 important?
ISO 50001 is part of the holistic Integrated Management System.
It is estimated that the ISO 50001 Energy Management Standard could have a positive impact on some 60% of the world’s energy use by providing public and private sector organisations with management strategies to increase energy efficiency, reduce costs and improve energy performance. Effective energy management should be a priority focus because of the significant potential to save energy and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
Every organisation needs to reduce its CO2 footprint by 50% by 2030 and achieve carbon zero by 2050.
ISO 50001 contributes and supports the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs are a global call to action to protect the planet, eradicate poverty and ensure that by 2030 all people enjoy peace and economic prosperity.
Environmental performance is growing in importance, and the challenges it poses to businesses are getting more complex and frequent.

What is required by an Organisation?
- Define their energy policy and document an energy planning process.
- Review energy use, consumption, and efficiency at defined intervals.
- Document the methodology and criteria used to develop the Energy Review, considering facilities, equipment, systems, or processes.
- Establish an energy baseline and identify Energy Performance Indicators (EnPIs) appropriate for monitoring and measuring its energy performance.
- Establish, implement, and maintain documented Energy Objectives and Targets.
- Continually improve energy performance, including energy efficiency, energy use and consumption.
An effective energy management system based on ISO 50001:2018 provides an organisation’s top management with a roadmap which allows them to:
- Minimise energy usage.
- Meet legislative and regulatory requirements more effectively and therefore be viewed more favourably by regulators.
- Provide an opportunity to systematically plan, control and monitor operational activities and processes that may impact on energy usage.
- Incorporate energy efficiency in the planning of all new investment.

ISO 50001 for ILAC Dublin
After Ilac Shopping Centre underwent several renovations and expansions, they made the strategic decision to pursue ISO 50001, ISO 140001 and ISO 45001 certification to transform the shopping centre into a sustainable and environmentally responsible space.
CGBC was appointed to perform a gap analysis, draft a business case and develop and deliver a project plan to achieve certification and implement an integrated management system.
