Government drive to ban sales of diesel and petrol cars in Ireland by 2030

The Irish Government is drafting radical new laws that will see the sale of new petrol and diesel cars banned by 2030, as part of a robust strategy to safeguard the environment.

Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment Richard Bruton has instructed department officials to prepare legislation, due to be published early in the new year, enforcing the ban the aim of which is to ensure that a minimum of one third of vehicles on the roads are electric in ten years' time.

Petrol & Diesel Emissions Accounted for 20% of Ireland's Overall Emissions in 2018

The landmark measures will be included in the impending Climate Action (Amendment) Bill 2019 which will be developed further in conjunction with other departments. The Government's Climate Action Plan aims to reduce emissions and be carbon neutral by 2050: transport emissions accounted for over 20% of Ireland's emissions in 2018.

The Government is aiming to have 936,000 electric vehicles on Irish roads by 2030, including battery operated and hybrid vehicles. Recently, Minister Bruton promised to double the amount of home chargers installed and further roll-out the nationwide network of on street charging points.
